As always a high standard of performance – I didn’t comment at the time, but last year’s Tippett was outstanding(you all sing as well as when I sang in the NCS 50 years ago – when music Master at St Bart’s!). The Elgar and Britten were superbly played. The Britten was new to the three of us – shame on us – but will be seeking a CD for Christmas, grandchildren to be alerted.
The Handel was disappointing. I am sorry to say this – the choir new the work and gave their all! But I do feel with the Abbey’s acoustics, suited so well to C16 material especially, that the pace of most numbers should have been more measured for better clarity. I know the work well and heard it recently sung at Reading Town Hall – the performance there was, perhaps, less inspiring, but diction was superior and dynamics more subtle.
