We are a large, non-auditioned choir that has performed a wide and varied repertoire from Mozart to Tavener for over 130 years.  We aspire to a high musical standard and aim to thrill our concert audiences.  Joined by professional musicians such as the renowned chamber orchestra London Concertante and the region's leading orchestra Southern Sinfonia, we perform three concerts a year in the Newbury area.  Our regular venues are St Nicolas Church, Newbury and the beautiful Abbey Church at Douai Abbey, Woolhampton. We hope you enjoy browsing our website and look forward to welcoming you at our rehearsals or at our next concert .

Our 2016 - 2017 season of concerts

This season has begun with two very successful and memorable concerts, in Newbury and London. We were invited to sing with the London Mahler Orchestra in a performance of Mahler’s Symphony No.2 (‘Resurrection’) at Southwark Cathedral, on 11th November, in aid of the Royal British Legion and Cancer Research UK. Being part of three hundred performers in a packed, candle-lit cathedral and singing such a powerful work was an experience we will never forget. We didn't think we could top that, but our Newbury concert on the 26th of that month featured the contemporary work of anti-war sentiment, The Armed Man: A Mass For Peace by Karl Jenkins. The full force of this piece was felt by the choir, orchestra and capacity audience, as Karl Jenkins' compatriot and fellow composer, Fiona Bennett, brings out clearly in her review for the Newbury Weekly News. You can read her review in full here.

On Saturday 18th March 2017, we presented Mendelssohn’s great oratorio Elijah, first performed by this choir in 1889, its fourth year of existence. It was a wonderful evening of music and many thanks to the stunning soloists and Southern Sinfonia.

Our final concert of the season, on Saturday 1st July 2017, will be a departure for us, but we have a long history of varied and innovative programming. Looking back to the first half of the twentieth century, we will get in the mood for jazz classics and favourite show tunes; then we come right back to the present with English composer Will Todd's choral jazz piece, Mass in Blue. We are delighted to announce that Will Todd himself will be accompanying us at the piano, along with his drummer and bass player who make up the Will Todd Trio. There will be a fabulous soprano soloist, and Cathal Garvey will pull it all together with his usual aplomb. Come and hear Newbury Choral Society as you have never heard them before!

NCS will be the lead choir in the Greenham Common War and Peace event (GWP17) which will take place in September. For more details about the event and rehearsals please click here.
